A Spanish company develops a battery with an autonomy of 800 kilometers

The Spanish company «Graphenano» has presented together with its Chinese partner «Chint» batteries made with a graphene polymer which, if they are used in electric vehicles, it would allow an autonomy of 800 kilometers. It also occupies between 20 and 30% less than a lithium battery and could be charged in just 5 minutes.

Graphene is a nanomaterial formed by pure carbon, with atoms arranged in regular hexagonal pattern, similar to graphite and whose characteristics are hardness, flexibility and elasticity.

It is transparent, has a very high thermal and electrical conductivity, is light and generates electricity when reached by light.

Grabat batteries presented by Graphenano’s president and CEO, Martín Martínez, are aimed to be used as home batteries – to be self-sufficient – in electric vehicles (both cars and bicycles), drones or even pacemakers.

In the case of the automobile, he emphasized that the technology they use cannot be compared with the current lithium, since although the latter has an energy density of 180 Wh / kg “it is not real”.

Grabat batteries, which are going to be made in Yecla (Murcia) from March, have a density of 1,000 Wh / kg, a voltage of 2.3v and when they have been analyzed by the independent organisms TÜV and Dekra, haven’t exploded, as can happen with a lithium battery. In addition, after being short-circuited, they returned to work with 60% of the load, according to Martinez.

According to the president, it has “a huge potential, since the loading and unloading speed is 100 C, while the one of a lithium is 3C, and it has no memory effect”.

This means that, if the power grid allows it, a vehicle could be loaded in 5 minutes, with which you can drive – in the case of a sub-compact car – for 800 kilometers, compared to the 400 kilometers that – he said – offers Tesla cars or the 250 kilometers of a Nissan Leaf or a Renault Zoe.

It could even reach aa autonomy of more than 1,000 kilometers, depending on the car. In the case of the sub-compact car, the weight of that battery wouldn’t reach 100 kilograms, he specified.

The manager stressed that the battery of graphene is modulable, so they are working with several car companies – no names were given – and airplane companies, such as Airbus, so they can adapt it to their products and decide the autonomy and the ability to charge and recharge they desire.

Talking about prices, which was avoided, he pointed out that it is similar to those of a lithium battery, because the most important thing is that it is profitable and can be commercialized to become “third industrial revolution”.

Its useful life is 4 times superior to the lithium ones and the charge can be inductive.

For the development of Grabat batteries, they have collaborated with the Universities of Córdoba and Ciudad Real. Home batteries have a power of 24 kW (three times more and occupies three times less than the present ones).

Manufacturing in Spain and China will be possible thanks to the contribution of the Chint Group, a Chinese multinational specialized in automation, electrical generation and production of solar panels.

The project of industrialization of the batteries has two phases. The first one, where 30 million euros were invested, will allow the construction of 20 manufacturing lines at the Yecla (Murcia, Spain) plant that will manufacture 80 million cells per year.

The first line is ready, it will start in March, and by June 5 lines will be expected to be running, which will increase to 20.

The second phase will entail an investment of 350 million euros to make the largest factory, which will make to employ 7,000 people and in 2019, a billing peak of 3,000-4,000 million euros will be obtained.
